Raymond M. Deméré returned home to Savannah, Georgia in 1921 and decided to go into business for himself. With America’s newfound fascination with the “gasoline buggy”, he decided that the petroleum business would be one of great promise.

Equipped with one barrel of lubricating oil, he founded “American Oil Company. Starting with just a warehouse, he soon added storage tanks and company-owned filling stations throughout Savannah.

In 1933, the company became known as “Colonial Oil” and greater expansion began. Raymond began construction on an independent ocean terminal and storage facility, and it soon became the largest of its kind in the Southeast United States.

Charles L. Jarrell became the president of the company following Mr. Deméré’s  death in 1953. Under the leadership of the founder’s son, Robert H. Deméré, a retail subsidiary was formed in 1963. This was originally called “Interstate Stations” but later became known as Enmark Stations, which now spans Georgia and the Carolinas.

Colonial and its subsidiaries have shown steady growth and have increased its international market presence by providing petroleum products to Puerto Rico and gasoline blendstock tankage in Europe.

The story of the Colonial Group has been marked with impressive accomplishments and a relentless dedication to the vision of the founder, Raymond Deméré. Following the tradition of his hard work and commitment to customers, we have furthered his greatest legacy – success.
